Heavier boards, particularly solid wood or dense bamboo boards rather than thin plastic ones, resist sliding on their own weight alone, which is part of why professional kitchens tend to favour substantial boards over lightweight ones even beyond the durability argument.
Counter Surface Matters Too
A board that stays put on laminate might still slide on polished stone, since smoother, more reflective counter surfaces generally offer less natural friction than textured ones. If a board seems stable in testing but shifts during actual use, checking whether the counter surface itself is unusually smooth is worth doing before assuming the board or the towel trick has failed.

With a genuinely stable board, the guide hand can focus entirely on positioning food and curling fingers away from the blade, the actual job it's meant to do. The knife hand can develop a consistent, confident rhythm without unconsciously adjusting for a surface that keeps shifting underneath.
